What do you like about working at SJL

Nice to work with hard working motivated colleagues together with a great buzz & atmosphere around the office

Jason’s insurance career started at the General Accident insurance Company  in 1988, where he spent a few months doing the filing, finding the post and making the tea which first introduced him to working in Insurance

He was then promoted to a trainee Commercial Underwriter dealing with per capita Contractors Liability Insurance, Commercial package Products including Retail, offices, pubs, restaurant & Residential & Commercial Property Owners insurances

A few years later he was promoted to a Commercial Underwriter involving more complex business including Commercial Combined, Combined Liability, Excess of Loss Liability and larger Property Owner Portfolios

He joined the AGF insurance company in the late 1990s where he was a senior underwriter in the National Schemes team underwriting a large rollover deal worth £5 million GWP with a National broker mostly onsite at the brokers office, this was dealing with all types of commercial property and liability business, in particular Commercial Combined and Property Portfolios involving professional, student and holiday home let’s in addition to a bespoke unoccupied buildings product

In 2003 Jason joined the NIG insurance company in Birmingham as a Senior Commercial trading underwriter, over the next 5 years he managed to develop broker accounts and underwrite over £1 million of Commercial property and liability business every year, this was achieved combining smaller property owners business with larger contractors and Commercial Combined business whilst maintaining  an underwriting profit for the Birmingham office

In late 2008 he accepted an opportunity to join and set up the new Liverpool Victoria office in Birmingham, from writing the first policy personally to taking the branch finally in 2018 to around a £25 million premium office.

His initial role at LV was a Senior trading underwriter but after a year he was promoted to the non motor underwriting manager of LV Birmingham.

During his time at LV he successfully won a Large property owners case worth 400k annual premium which was a portfolio of residential properties with various types of tenants the majority being professional and DSS non referral occupants. Another large win was a 750k annual premium which was a hotel, restaurant, pub and gym chain

After almost 10 years at LV of delivering profitable growth he decided to move on following the LV/Allianz merger

His current role is at SJL in Worcester where he is the Underwriting manager in a team that operates and looks after a suite of Property Owners and Package Insurance binders. This is a very fast moving and enjoyable role in a very hard working department that specialises in Residential property owners including Professional, student, holiday, unoccupied and DSS let’s and Commercial property owners for manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and unoccupied risks and Package insurances for Pubs, Restaurants, Offices & Retail businesses
